In a surprise move, Liverpool defender Martin Kelly made a switch to another English Premier League team, Crystal Palace. Now I would have expected a move to a bigger team or another league, but I guess Crystal Palace was the right move for Kelly.
Liverpool FC has plenty of defenders and it was just a matter of time before one was allowed to leave. I would have assumed Daniel Agger or Martin Skrtel would make a transfer somewhere, but it was Kelly who would jump ship. Liverpool, during the transfer window, brought in Dejan Lovren from Southampton and Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid to attempt to upgrade the defense. This could just be my thinking, but if a player sees more and more guys coming into the club to battle for your spot, you’re going to be worried, which could cause a demand for a transfer.
Kelly made the right move; not only will he start at Crystal Palace but he’ll enjoy some job security. At bigger clubs, no one knows how long one will stay which calls for 100 percent effort every game in and out.
Kelly signed a three-year deal for a reported £1.5 million to Crystal Palace. Kelly is 24 years old and has a history of nagging knee injuries which has limited his first-team appearances for Liverpool. Along with injuries, Liverpool has plenty of right backs who could’ve challenged Kelly for his position with Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan. The injuries and amount of depth at the right back position has allowed Kelly to make his decision and play elsewhere for the following three years.
