La Liga a Two-Horse Race After Atletico Loses Key Players
After losing several key players, including Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois, Atletico seem to be out of the title race before the season has even begun. This may not come as a shock to many due to the history of Atletico being labeled a “selling club.” The club has made a pattern of selling key players, most notably at the striker position. Costa is now part of a collection of strikers sold by Atletico that includes the likes of Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan, Radamel Falcao and David Villa. This is one of the key reasons why Atletico has had difficulty in holding their position as one of Europe’s top clubs.
Rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, on the other hand, have spent huge this offseason in an effort to dethrone Atletico as Kings of Spain. New additions Toni Kroos, James Rodriguez and Keylor Navas have given Real Madrid arguably the world’s best squad, as they head into the season looking to top last year’s Copa Del Rey and Champions League victories. Barcelona, meanwhile, have added Luis Suarez to their talented attacking core of Neymar and Lionel Messi, while also signing Ivan Rakitic to aid their midfield.
Although Barcelona and Real Madrid strive for success in all competitions, winning La Liga is always their main objective heading into each campaign. Real Madrid have won the league a record 32 times, and are looking to increase their lead over Barcelona, who have held the league title 22 times. With their highly-rated offseason acquisitions, look for the league title to be fought between Real and Barca. Their two match-ups, also known as El Clasico, will have a significant influence in deciding which one of the clubs will become champions.
