Like any other Premier League season, the 2014-15 version will throw up all kinds of surprises and storylines to follow. As always, there will be players who play below expectations and there will be players who exceed expectation levels. The upcoming new season will be no different, and here are 10 players who will perform above expectations in the 2014-15 Premier League season.

Charlie Austin's rise to the Premier League has been somewhat remarkable. Austin was not even playing professionally until 2009, but since then, he has risen through the English pyramid of professional leagues right up to the Premier League. Austin is a goalscorer who has had an impressive goal ratio throughout his rise, and although many will doubt his ability to do it in the Premier League, he'll prove them wrong this year.

Tom Ince has been on the radar of a lot of big clubs over the past few years. He has been linked to Liverpool extensively and turned down a move to Inter Milan this past summer in favor of a move to Hull City. On the face of it, it seems crazy, but Ince wants to play every week and continue to develop as a player. He will do that at Hull, and this season could be the one where he truly announces himself on the Premier League stage.

Junior Hoilett was a very talented player when he come through as a 19-year-old at Blackburn Rovers, but his career has not taken off as people expected as of yet. The year Hoilett had in the Championship last season will have done him good, though, and with him now being deployed in a more attacking midfielder role this season, it can be a successful year for Hoilett in QPR's return to the Premier League.

Gylfi Sigurdsson never seemed to fit in after his move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, but now back at Swansea City, it could be the ideal move to get Sigurdsson back to his best. He enjoyed a successful loan spell at Swansea the season before he moved to Spurs, and if Sigurdsson finds that form again, he will be one to watch this season.

6. Cheikhou Kouyate

Cheikhou Kouyate is unproven outside of the Belgian League, but the Senegalese international has huge potential and is definitely a risk worth taking for West Ham United. Kouyate is very versatile with the ability to play center-back, defensive midfield or as a box-to-box midfielder. He should suit the Premier League being 6-foot-4 and having the physical presence he does, and he should impress in his first season in England.

Dejan Lovren was signed by Liverpool for £20m this summer, so the expectations are already relatively high; but he has the potential to exceed even those expectations. Lovren was a standout player at Southampton last year, and with Liverpool desperate to improve their defense, he will prove to be the perfect signing for Brendan Rodgers. Lovren will be integral and the rock of the Liverpool defense in the coming season.

4. Calum Chambers

When Calum Chambers signed with Arsenal this summer for £16m, a few fans raised an eyebrow or two, but he has shown in the games since then that the signing is an extremely astute one by Arsene Wenger. Chambers will force his way into the Arsenal team ahead of schedule this year, and seeing as he can play multiple positions, expect Wenger to find a place for the 19-year-old in his team sooner rather than later.

3. Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand was declared finished by a lot of fans after his performances last season, but it's only physically that he is declining. He is still one of the best defenders with the ball at his feet, and when it comes to defensive positioning and leadership in the backline. Playing in a 3-5-2 at Queens Park Rangers this year will supply plenty of cover for Ferdinand's lack of pace and allow his remaining qualities to flourish.

2. Bojan Krkic

Bojan Krkic was a supposed superstar when he was breaking into the Barcelona team back in 2007. Even for a player as talented as Krkic, though, it can be difficult to work your way into a team like Barcelona. And in the last few years, the Spaniard has spent time with AC Milan, Roma and with Ajax in Holland. But he needs to settle at club for a while now, and Stoke will be a club where he can do that and be the star player that he is.

Erik Lamela was the subject of many jokes after his failure to live up to his £30m price tag since his move to Tottenham Hotspur from Roma last year. Lamela barely played, and seeing as the Argentine was supposed to fill the shoes of Gareth Bale, it made for a huge disappointment at Spurs. There is no doubting Lamela's ability, however, and after having a year to settle in England, this will be the year that he shines.
