The English Premier League kicked off this weekend with a number of Americans taking to the field. With that in mind, there have been a number of American soccer players that have pursued their careers in Europe. Here is a list of American players that have had a successful career in the major European leagues.

The Seattle Sounder attacker spent his most successful spell in Europe with Fulham before making a more lucrative switch to Tottenham. Although Fulham is not a top tier team in the Premier League, Dempsey managed to get to the Europa League final even overturning a 3-1 deficit in the first-leg against Juventus. The American captain also won Fulham player of the season twice before moving on to North London.

Howard made his European debut in a Manchester United jersey after a successful spell as the Metrostars goalkeeper. Howard’s Manchester United career started well, but a loss of confidence after a blunder against Porto in the Champions League put his position in question. The American No. 1, would then make his way to Everton and even score a goal. Howard started his twelfth season in the English Premier League on Saturday.

At the age of 40, Brad Friedel was still starting in the English Premier League. Although the former U.S.M.N.T. No. 1 lost his spot to Hugo Lloris, Friedel is still a formidable keeper. The Ohio native has 581 caps to his name in a career spanning 17 years in England. Friedel’s longevity alone speaks volumes of his success in Europe.

The former Schalke midfielder was one of the reasons for the USMNT’s success in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil this summer. Jones has long established himself as a midfield enforcer in the Bundesliga, even winning himself three caps for the German national team. The midfielder bruiser made 243 appearances in a successful European career that even saw him compete in the UEFA Champions League.

The Italian international was born in New Jersey and is one of the most painful losses for the USMNT. Rossi would move to the Parma F.C. youth team at the age of 12 before being signed by Manchester United as a youth. The ACF Fiorentina striker would go on to play in the Premier League, the La Liga and the Serie A. Rossi has scored over 113 goals in 264 appearances in Europe, making him the greatest American talent to play in Europe.
