Chelsea will be closing the curtain of the first round of matches in the 2014-15 Premier League at Burnley when they face off later on today. Jose Mourinho has new players he can rely on to get the job done as these men add stability, stamina and recent success on their resumes. Will it be enough to win the Premier League for the first time since 2010? Only time will tell, but giving you a good idea of what they can do to succeed seems right.
Mourinho will still be sticking to his trusted formation — the 4-2-3-1 — as defense and attacking on the counter are his specialties. He excelled with this during his three-year stint at Real Madrid and decided to bring it back with him to the Premier League.
Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres did not get the job done last season, so he brought about a La Liga champion in Diego Costa to cement his role as the lone striker. Costa scored a stunning 35 goals in all competitions last season for his former club. His height and strength enable him to win balls easily in the air and to hold off opponents who try to knock him off the ball. He is only 25 and has already established himself as a world-class striker.
Midfielder Cesc Fabregas returns to the Premier League from Barcelona where he won the Champions League and La Liga titles. His ability on the ball, from set pieces and vision make him the true danger that he is. He will be responsible for unlocking the defense with his shots from distance, ability to hold possession and sending the ball up through the middle and down the wings. He will be the go-to guy moving forward in the build-up and the counter.
Filipe Luis just won the La Liga title last season along with Costa while playing for Atletico Madrid. He is a left back who sprints up the field during every attack and counter to be that extra passing option. He is not a dirty player by any means which makes him a danger for attacking players.
These aforementioned players are the new keys to Mourinho’s puzzle. If they all play together against Burnley today, they will do damage in one way or another.
As for Burnley, their return to the Premier League is most likely going to be spoiled by the powerhouse that is Chelsea. They would have rather faced an easier opposition, but this can be a treat for the fans as they will give it their all against Mourinho’s boys. Their best player is none other than 23-year-old striker Marvin Sordell.
Veteran defender Steven Reid will look to be the rock in the back line against what is expected to be a one-sided attacking affair this evening.
Prediction: Burnley 0-3 Chelsea
