Real Madrid will begin their new La Liga campaign next Monday against Cordoba, but as that time fast approaches, there are still some issues for head coach Carlo Ancelotti to deal with. Madrid will be hoping to return to some La Liga success this season after finally winning La Decima in the Champions League last year, but securing the La Liga title will prove complicated, and will also require Madrid to be at their best right from the outset.

Raphael Varane is the future for Real Madrid at center-back, but the performances of Pepe lasts season while Varane was out injured rightfully earned him his place in the team. However, with Varane returning, something will have to give. Varane struggled to earn his place back from Pepe when he did return to fitness, but that will have to change in order for Varane to remain happy in Madrid long-term.

Madrid currently have some high-profile players that they are trying to offload, but the longer those situations drag on, the more potential for unrest there can be. Players like Angel Di Maria and Sami Khedira are obviously available for transfer, and both would of been hoping to sort their futures quickly, but with no imminent deals to sell on the horizon, it looks like the unwanted players will have to nervously hang around a while longer yet.

Madrid's recent No. 1 goalkeeper, Diego Lopez, was allowed to join AC Milan on a free transfer this summer, which has now left Madrid with Iker Casillas as their No. 1 again. Casillas has not been the No. 1 for a few seasons, and was even thought to be considering leaving the club this summer. Is Casillas the goalkeeper Ancelotti really wants? Is Keylor Navas good enough to take the mantle? Either way, a decision needs to be made.

James Rodriguez was an outstanding performer in the World Cup for Colombia, and subsequently an outstanding signing for Real Madrid soon after. However, Carlo Ancelotti likes to play a 4-3-3 formation, and fitting Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema into that formation will prove nigh on impossible for the Italian. A change will be necessary, but Ancelotti seems reluctant to turn his back on his chosen setup.

Cristiano Ronaldo had some nagging injuries at the end of last season, and they certainly carried over into the World Cup, negatively affecting his performances in Brazil. Now, even after a short summer break, Ronaldo still seems to be having issues ahead of the new season. Madrid ideally need Ronaldo at full fitness to be in the hunt for the biggest prizes, and he clearly is not that right now.
