Tim Howard has always been an outstanding goalkeeper, and he brought much attention to himself during the 2014 World Cup. The USMNT has a lot of top goalkeepers, but at the moment none are near Howard’s level. His one-year break will give the others a chance to prove themselves.

Tim Howard has not asked for an indefinite hiatus. He has given his break an expiration date and only asks for one year. Howard announced his retirement date early last year as 2018. His contract will continue with Everton until then, and he will even possibly join the USMNT in the 2018 World Cup. This is the not the end of an era. He has just hit pause for a moment.
