Who Could Be Newcastle United's 10th Summer Signing?

Newcastle United fans are left pondering whether more signings are on the way after Neil Warnock said the club was close to unveiling their 10th signing in an interview he gave to television broadcasters BT Sport.

Warnock, ex-Leeds and QPR manager, told BT Sport before Newcastle’s match at Aston Villa on Saturday that his friend Alan Pardew had told him that the Toon were going to unveil their 10th signing of the summer by the end of the weekend.

What Does Newcastle Need?

Newcastle put in a poor performance in the final third against Villa, so most fans will be hoping for a new striker or, at the very least, an attack-minded midfield player. However, this window so far has seen Pardew bring in four new strikers, three permanently and one on loan.

Emmanuel Riviere, Siem de Jong, Ayoze Perez and Facundo Ferrerya (the only loan signing of this window) have been brought in to replace Loic Remy — who decided not to return to Tyneside following last seasons loan — and Papiss Cisse, who has been off form for the entirety of the previous campaign and is currently injured. Despite their lack of goals this season, zero from two games, it looks unlikely that Pardew would bring another striker into the club.

It would be far more possible that the signing that Warnock was talking about is a defender. With some gaps in the defense, Newcastle are in dire need of a player who can come straight into the starting lineup and do a job for the team. However, with the apparent lack of funds, the new signing is probably a young player got on the cheap — and knowing Newcastle, probably from France.

Who Does Newcastle Have?

Although the team has an abundance of strikers, they only have four defenders to play in two roles. This may sound like enough, but should one get injured — or sent off like Mike Williamson did against Villa — that leaves three players for two roles, two to play in central defense, and one on the bench. This isn’t enough cover, and this is where the team faltered last season — lots of injuries, and a lack of players to replace them.

Who Could It Be?

Newcastle have been linked with several big name signings, including the likes of Jordan Rhodes and Danny Welbeck. However, as mentioned above, they are more likely to be in the market for a young player. The fans would like a striker, and the board would probably want another defender.

However, rumors still persist that Wilfried Zaha could be making the move to Tyneside. The winger has been out of favor since returning to Manchester United after a loan deal with Cardiff City last year. The player could move into a striker role, and that would satisfy many Newcastle fans.

However, nothing has been confirmed yet and whilst Newcastle would like another defender, the previous history of the transfer dealings at United would show them to only move for the right person. It is unlikely to be Zaha, but Newcastle haven’t been linked with many others recently. The wait continues.
