Before the start of the new Barclays Premier League season, there were many rumors surrounding Sam Allardyce and his job at West Ham United. The owners subsequently stuck with Allardyce, and he has made some shrewd signings in the window. It is no secret that "Big Sam" wants a few more acquisitions before the window slams shut. Here are the five players the Hammers should target.

Peter Crouch seems to be further down the pecking order at Stoke City than he would like. With the new additions of Mame Biram Diouf and Bojan Krkic, Crouch has started both of Stoke's opening fixtures on the bench. With Andy Carroll out for some time, Crouch would fill the void and be a good replacement for the injured Carroll.

Matija Nastasic looks like his game time at Manchester City will be cut to a bare minimum. Manuel Pellegrini has put Nastasic up for grabs, which has alerted Sam Allardyce among others. The 21-year-old would provide great competition for the likes of Winston Reid and James Tomkins in defense, and he could prove to be a good bit of business for West Ham.

It's no secret that West Ham United are in desperate need of a right-back. Joey O'Brien and Guy Demel are currently slogging it out for that position. It's a weak area for the Hammers and Micah Richards would be the perfect man for that role. Richards doesn't look like he's in Pellegrini's future plans and would surely relish a move to West Ham for first-team soccer.

Connor Wickham was a rumoured target for West Ham over the summer. Wickham, who had a great run of scoring form at the back-end of last season, would give the Hammers a different dimension upfront. The 21-year-old may not be prolific in front of goal, but if he could resurrect his form from late last season, he would be a good signing for the London club.

Philipp Wollscheid is a man West Ham have been heavily linked with, and like Nastasic he would provide the Hammers real competition in defense. The Bayer Leverkusen man has been capped twice by Germany and has played over 50 games for Leverkusen. The 25-year-old would be a good acquisition to Sam's squad and would shore up his defensive worries.
