After a historic season with Real Madrid, which included capturing La Decima and winning his second Ballon D’or, Cristiano Ronaldo won yet another award as he picked up his first UEFA Best Player in Europe award on Thursday. Ronaldo was one of three finalists, which included Bayern Munich stars Arjen Robben and Manuel Neuer.
The 2013-14 campaign was arguably the best of Ronaldo’s 12 years as a professional. Along with helping Real Madrid capture their tenth Champions League title, he also broke the record for most goals in one Champions League campaign with 17 and won the European Golden shoe with Luis Suarez. He finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 31 goals which ultimately led to him winning the Pichichi trophy.
Individually, the shining moment for Ronaldo’s campaign last season had to be winning his second Ballon D’or. The Portugese winger came up short the previous four years to Barcelona and Argentina star, Lionel Messi. To hold up the Ballon D’or trophy once again brought tears to Ronaldo’s eyes and energized him for the second half the season in which he went on a scoring tear.
Despite healing from a knee injury, Ronaldo is already off to a great start to the 2014-15 campaign and looks to repeat as the Ballon D’or winner. After scoring a brace against Sevilla, Ronaldo helped Madrid achieve another trophy in the UEFA Super Cup. He also scored in the first game for Madrid in their La Liga campaign against Cordoba. It doesn’t look like the 29-year old’s scoring run will end anytime soon. At this rate, Ronaldo is on path to break more records and pick up a lot of hardware.
