The La Liga teams will be eager to replicate their dominance in the competition from last year. The Spanish clubs awaited their groups to be filled with anticipation. With Real Madrid eager to be the first team to repeat as champions, the Spanish teams will be aiming for a deep run into the UEFA Champions League. Here is an analysis and prediction of La Liga clubs in the group stages of the Champions League.

Los Leones were possibly given the most lackluster group, which looks more like an Europa League group. Athletic Bilbao is by no means competition favorites, but they will be thanking the stars for this group. The San Mames club are joined by FC Porto, FC Shakhtar Donetsk and BATE Borisov in Group H. Athletic should advance from the group with tricky games against Porto and Shakhtar in Ukraine.

4. Atletico Madrid

Los Colchoneros were the darlings of the UEFA Champions League last year making it all the way to the finals and losing it in a heartbreaking manner. The reigning La Liga champions will want to prove that last year was not a fluke. With a Group A consisting of Juventus FC, Olympiacos CFP and Malmo FF, Atletico’s advancement looks all but certain. El Atleti should be competing for top spot with the Italian champions.

3. FC Barcelona

The Catalan club will face off against Paris Saint-Germain FC, AFC Ajax and Apoel Nicosia in Group F. Barcelona should be expected to win this group, but PSG will be tough competition and Ajax will be aiming to trip up the two favorites. Soccer fans around the world will be excited to watch Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic square off, with the PSG man’s disdain for his former club being no secret.

2. Real Madrid CF

The Kings of Europe will be looking to be the first back-to-back UEFA Champions League winners. Los Merengues have been handed a fairly straight forward group in Group B. FC Basel, PFC Ludogorets Razgrad and Liverpool FC will merely be formalities as Real Madrid march to Berlin. However, a cavalier attitude against Liverpool could hurt, but there is no doubt that Los Blanco will advance from the group stages.

Real Madrid should advance from Group B as the winners, but the rest of the La Liga teams will have to work hard to win their respective groups. Atletico and Barcelona ought not struggle for qualification, but nothing is certain in the Champions League. Athletic Club will need to win tricky encounters if they are to advance.
