Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid all picked up a win in the domestic league. However, Real Madrid were unable to claim all three points as they were defeated by Real Sociedad. Here is an analysis of the UEFA Champions League participating clubs in La Liga for the weekend.

The Catalan club traveled to Villarreal for the second match day of the La Liga season. The Camp Nou club had to wait until the 82nd minute for a beautifully set up goal from Lionel Messi to Sandro. The match ended 1-0 in favor of Barcelona, but the Yellow Submarine did not make it easy for Barcelona. Villarreal exposed the Barca defense coming close to scoring on numerous occasions. Barcelona lacked bite in their finishing.

The San Mames side played to a comprehensive 3-0 victory at home. Los Leones never gave Levante a good look or an actual chance on their goal. Athletic started their tally with a goal from Aritz Aduriz in the 32nd followed by Anders Iturraspe and Iker Munian in the 51st and the 76th minute. Athletic Bilbao were convincing against Levante and if the Leones can keep this form, success in the group stages is within grasp.

3. Real Madrid

Los Blancos started absolutely magnificently as Real Madrid scored two wonderful goals quickly and what should have been a third. Complacency would creep into the La Decima winner, which allowed four unanswered goals from Real Sociedad. Carlo Ancelotti opted to rest Cristiano Ronaldo for the Madrid Derby. Real Madrid will want to forget this game as soon as possible if they want to repeat in the Champions League.

2. Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid played at home against SD Eibar. The game was expected to be a rout by the Madrid club who looks to replicate the success and dominance of last season, but the Basque club looked more convincing. Los Colchoneros won 2-1 with early goals from Mario Mandzukic and Miranda. However, Eibar pulled one back in the 33rd minute by a goal from Abraham Minero. Atletico came under fire for the rest of the game but got the job done.

Outside of Athletic Bilbao the Champions League participating teams suffered. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were able to scrap through with a result, but Real Madrid were dismantled handily without Cristiano Ronaldo. The Spanish sides will need to fine tune their teams to further their claims in the Champions League.
