Radamel Falcao has joined Premier League side Manchester United to complete a summer of high-caliber signings for the team, hoping to bring back the glory days as champions. The Colombian international adds an instant threat as well as experience in the final third.
He shone at FC Porto, moved to Atletico Madrid and was then purchased by AS Monaco a season ago. Due to the intentions and influence of Manchester United, he was loaned to the former champions for £6 million. United will also pay his salary, £18 million, for the year. There is an option to permanently purchase his services for £35 million at season’s end.
Falcao was brought in to help the team score. The passing and even intelligent defending is there, but finishing chances in front of frame has been quite difficult for United so far. With two draws and a loss for a total of two points, the addition of a world-class striker was necessary.
Falcao is nowhere near the fastest player, but his ability to make the right runs, direct teammates and finish with his head and feet alike make him the most valuable asset the club has up top. He will be starting every game that matters in the quest for another Premier League title.
While Falcao will not guarantee the Premier League title just yet, his arrival does prove that United are looking to buy their way to the top. This does not always work, but if there is any coach that could make it happen, it is certainly Mr. van Gaal.
