Roberto Mancini’s Comments On Manchester City Are Legit

Roberto Mancini has recently been quoted on how he is partially responsible for Manchester City’s success. He said, “I think that we started to build this team five years ago. In two years we won the Premier League, the FA Cup – we won everything in England” to the popular football magazine and website FourFourTwo. He went on to say, “And this current team are playing nine of my players all of the time. I am very happy with that because I know these players. I think it’s not easy to build a strong team in only four or five years.”

Although he was sacked as the City manager in 2013, he has every right to make these comments. The nine players he’s referring to make up the core of the squad, which includes Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero. They’re some of the best in the world but weren’t always like that. Mancini saw potential in them and made the right decision in signing them. He also signed or worked with Edin Dzeko, Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta and Samir Nasri. Mancini still reaped the benefits of their talents, but current manager Manuel Pellegrini is the one who is truly benefiting.

As being manager for one year, he was thrust into a position of success, with one of the most talented squads and virtually unlimited transfer funds at his disposal. Mancini worked hard and made all the right moves to ensure City’s success in the future. It certainly worked — two Premier League championships in a course of 5 years is astounding, especially for the quality that City had before his arrival. Although he wasn’t there for one of them, he laid the basis for what was to come during his tenure. At this point Pellegrini could take on a laissez-faire style and be heralded for the team’s success.

Mancini is out of work, but that doesn’t give his comments any less legitimacy. As manager of Manchester’s “other side,” he laid the foundation for one of the Premier League’s best squads and shouldn’t be criticized for his comments.
