Marco Reus Needs To Leave Borussia Dortmund

Marco Reus is an unbelievable talent for Borussia Dortmund. After his transfer from Borussia Mochengladbach, he has accumulated 16 man of the match awards, 41 goals and 27 assists. These numbers put in very much in the mold of a Cristiano Ronaldo style winger for this team. However, in recent weeks, reports have emerged that there is a possible release clause in his contract to let him move on at a fairly inexpensive price. In addition, there is a contract dispute between Reus and the club which puts his future in jeopardy.

After losing Robert Lewandowski and Mario Goetze to Bayern Munich, Reus has put the team on his back and dragged them through the Bundesliga, albeit unsuccessfully. Only recently returning from injury suffered during the World Cup, their domestic form has been shocking, only made up for by their form in the Champions League. The signings made to replace the former star players have not lived up to their hype, and it has shown. They are currently in a relegation battle, sitting in 15th place in the table with six losses in nine games.

So what should Reus do? Should he stay at Dortmund and try to plug the holes of a sinking ship? Or should he move on somewhere else to try and win some silverware?

Staying at Dortmund is not a good option if he wants to further his career. Reus has the potential to be a top five player in the world, but he can’t do that on a team with a losing record. He needs to transfer somewhere that will give him a starting place in the squad but has the potential to win a title and move forward in Europe.

That is why Munich is not a good idea for the young German either. They are one of the best teams in the world, and that is because of the quality players they have in the side. Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery occupy both flanks, and are both currently top 10 players, so Reus would have a tough time edging out either of these players. Robben is slightly older, so he may not play for many more seasons, but Reus would need immediate first team football.

Looking at other leagues, Reus would do well in a fast paced, frenetic league that can compete with the best. That is why he would make a great fit in either La Liga or the Premier League.

If he transferred to La Liga, the ideal fit would be most likely Atletico Madrid. This is a team that has been picked apart after last year’s title winning campaign, but manager Diego Simeone has done well to pick up the pieces with the likes of Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Greizmann coming in last summer. Atletico need one more world class player if they are to continue competing with Barcelona and Real Madrid, and Reus would be an ideal fit.

The other club that is a match for Reus is Manchester City. He would be the natural replacement for an aging Jesus Navas. Reus matches the Spaniard’s quickness but is more technical and can cut in to score a goal, something Navas never threatens to do as a pure winger. City could also afford the transfer fee and possible wages for the German, making him a must buy for a side that, unbelievably, is lacking a creative spark in the final third, even with the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva.

Reus has the potential to be one of the best players in the world as early as next season, but he needs to find a club conducive to his play style and one that will give him a chance to show his talents on the world stage. Reus needs to leave Dortmund, possibly as soon as January, if he wants his career to flourish.
