Los Angeles FC is Off to a Good Start With Ownership

Los Angeles FC 2017 Ownership

After Chivas USA played their final match on Sunday, it was MLS officially announcing that Chivas would cease operations. It was a crushing blow to longtime Chivas fans, but the rumors of such had been floating around for a couple months. MLS bought Chivas from sister club Chivas Guadalajara, and said they would sell to person or group who would re-brand for the next year, but the announcement of the sale came later rather than sooner. Along with the announcement came the fact that the new Los Angeles club would not play until 2017.

As scheduled, on Thursday Don Garber announced the ownership of the new Los Angeles club will be called Los Angeles Football Club or simply Los Angeles FC. This re-brand will take two years to happen; so, L.A.’s second club will not return until 2017. The two-year break may be upsetting, but it comes with many added bonuses, one of which is a downtown stadium — something some Los Angeles Galaxy fans had been hoping for themselves for sometime. Galaxy and AEG recently invested over $15 million into the StubHub Center — Galaxy’s home stadium in Carson, Calif. — which is a sign that the Galaxy do not plan on leaving the StubHub Center any time soon. This probably was done based on the fact that LAFC would be seeking a local near downtown.

The announcement of the new L.A. club came with a couple familiar faces in the ownership group; the Prominent Ownership Group is led by Henry Nguyen and Peter Guber. The latter is co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Magic Johnson, who also owns a part of the Dodgers, is among the many others listed in the ownership group. Another notable member of the ownership group is former USWNT star Mia Hamm Garciaparra. The ownership group has many well-known people, which means that LAFC is off to a good start.

LAFC will join as the 22nd team in 2017, because the Atlanta expansion club is also set to join that same year.
