The international break has plagued professional soccer for some time. Countries borrow players compensated by professional clubs and return them injured as the pro teams carry the entirety of the burden. With competitions across Europe heating up, here is a list of the worst injuries to happen during this international break. Hopefully, these clubs can cope well without their star assets.

Manchester United are optimistic about Di Maria’s injury. The Argentine winger picked up an ankle injury in a friendly against Portugal. The former Real Madrid winger will have x-rays on the injured ankle. Di Maria has been one of Man U’s best players this season and his absence will be felt against Arsenal if his injury is too severe.

The Atletico Madrid defender picked up an injury in his left thigh in a friendly against Austria. The Brazilian is one of Diego Simeone’s first choice players. Initial reports indicate that the Atletico center back will be out for at least a week.

Sturridge just returned to full training with Liverpool on Monday, but picked up another injury to his thigh. Liverpool are desperate to have the star striker back, but the Merseyside club will have to wait another six weeks. Sturridge picked up his most recent injury during a Liverpool training session.

The Croatian midfielder picked up a tear in his thigh in a Euro Qualifier against Italy. Modric had been one of Real Madrid’s most important players and the former Tottenham star will be out for three months.

The World Cup-winning German captain broke his ankle in training with Bayern Munich during the international break. Lahm retired from international play after the World Cup. The Bavarian captain will require surgery and at least three months on the sidelines before he returns to action. Lahm is an integral part of Bayern and his absence will affect the club in more than one way.
