Two months after signing a season-long loan deal at Manchester United, Colombia and Monaco talismanic forward Radamel Falcao is yet to play a full match for United due to injuries which may impede him through at least the first half of this English Premier League season.
Manager Louis Van Gaal‘s injury update ahead of the clash against Arsenal last weekend suggested a setback to the player’s recovery process — a calf complaint by the player will reportedly rule him out for longer than expected.
Falcao missed participating in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil for his country Colombia as a result of an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in January. In his absence, his compatriot and former teammate at Monaco, James Rodriguez, who just recently made a switch to Spanish Giants Real Madrid, gave an outstanding performance and clinched the FIFA Golden Boot Award for being the highest goal scorer with six goals in the competition.
The new injury reports could see Van Gaal getting the stick from fans if Falcao refuses to deliver the goods for the club. Many ex-Red Devils already have raised eyebrows at the club’s decision to sell Danny Welbeck, a 23-year-old attacker, to Arsenal for a paltry sum of £16m, before signing Falcao, who is yet to make an impact at Old Trafford. Van Gaal must proceed with caution if United’s season is to be be worthy of commendation with Falcao in the thick of the action.
Falcao’s Europa League Cup exploits will not be forgotten in a hurry as he was a thorn in the sides of defenders and bagged many goals for his former club Atletico Madrid on their way to lifting the trophy in the 2011/2012 season. When the time came for a move last summer, the money had to be right for Atletico to agree to a sale, and so the rich owners of Monaco were able to fork out £50 demanded by the Spanish club and the Colombian made his move to the elite division of the French League, where Monaco competes. While Falcao’s credentials and track record as a prolific goal scorer cannot be questioned, United’s decision to sign him and offload Welbeck may just end up a bad one.
