Paul Pogba is every team’s dream midfielder. He is strong, fast, technical, has great vision and a vicious right foot that could worry any goalkeeper in the game. The best part about him, however, is he is only 21 years old.
Already a mainstay in both Juventus and the French national team, he is progressing at an incredible rate. Last season, he scored seven goals and registered seven assists on the offensive side of the ball, while also winning 2.2 aerial duels per game on average. He amassed six “Man of the Match” performances for his efforts last season, and already has two in 10 appearances this season.
He is the ultimate midfielder, and as a result, is highly sought after. Potential bids from Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool were recently rejected in favor of staying at Juventus, and Pogba signed a new contract that is going to keep him in Italy until 2019.
Pogba is very much in the Yaya Toure mold of midfielder. He has a fantastic engine and a great reading of the game which lets him fulfill duties on both sides of the ball. He also has the power to drive through the opposing midfield and bully most defenders at the back to drive through on goal, which makes him a great scoring asset.
His WhoScored.com rating of 7.86 for the season so far puts him second in ratings, just behind fellow former Red Devil Carlos Tevez. This is astonishing, as he is just 21 years old and he is in a squad full of stars like Tevez, Patrice Evra, Gianluigi Buffon and Arturo Vidal, often heralded as the best midfielder on the planet.
The ability for Juventus to keep both Vidal and Pogba also speaks to the power that club has. The Italian league has never generally been viewed as one of the top European leagues and is often viewed not as somewhere that players play in their prime, as a move to England or Spain could be far more lucrative and glamorous. The fact that Juventus has managed to not only keep, but renew the contracts of two of the best midfielders in the world speaks to the power and pull of the prestigious club.
If you haven’t heard of Pogba until now, be prepared to hear a lot more of it at future Ballon D’Or presentations, as he could be one of the best midfielders to play the game.
