FA is Right to Investigate Mario Balotelli For Bad Choice in Meme Sharing
Mario Balotelli is well known to soccer fans around the world, but not necessarily for his soccer skills. Balotelli is a talented player, but his theatrics often get him into trouble. Well, he is in trouble once again, but this time it’s not for something dramatic that happened during a match, but rather something he did on social media. He reposted a racist meme on instagram, and although he tried to delete it, it was too late. It was a joke in poor taste, but he of all people should have known better.
The image was of Mario from Super Mario Bros. — Balotelli’s nickname namesake — but the text of the image was what made it inappropriate.
If you’ve read the meme, then you know there’s no need to explain why this statement was racist and why he shouldn’t have shared such an image. It may have just been a joke, but Balotelli represents more than just himself when he does anything on social media.
Of course Balotelli responded quickly by saying that his mother was Jewish, and said the he was just unlucky. He never wants to take responsibility for his actions. Obviously it was unlikely that he meant to offend some one by reposting the image, but he has to accept that it was racist even though that was not his intention.
The FA is now going to investigate the situation and decide whether or not to take action for Balotelli’s mishap. The FA does have guidelines for social media in which race-related breaches result in a ban. He has faced racism on the pitch himself, and although this is not the same thing he of all people should understand why people were upset.
