Radamel Falcao is a fantastic player, but is it worth it for Louis van Gaal to put down top dollar for the striker?

Falcao is the most expensive transfer ever since one can remember, costing Manchester United £6 million for his season-long loan, and would ultimately cost the club a massive £43.5 million this summer. While his name is one that managers would drool over to have, his performance has been lacking in his last appearances.

While he is injured, the idea that a prolific player like Falcao could certainly make an impact coming off the bench is a fine assumption, but he has only logged one goal and two assists in six appearances. This is very far away from the 153 goals in 197 appearances he has scored for his other clubs, Monaco, Porto, and Atletico Madrid. Nicknamed El Tigre in his native Colombia, he has definitely his a rough patch since his knee injury prior to the World Cup.

Normally one would think staying would be great, but not for the money. His £265,000-a-week wage is insane for a player coming off the bench, and with Robin van Persie finding the back of the net recently, it’s hard to utilize him effectively. If he wanted to be the lone striker, van Persie must break out of his current scoring form. Even so, youth academy graduate James Wilson is looking to be a fantastic prospect as a super-sub for the English club, further delineating the notion that Falcao will return to Monaco.

Only the upcoming months will tell whether or not Falcao will return to Old Trafford in the approaching transfer window.
