Sunderland are in a relegation fight in the Premier League and the moves the club makes -- or doesn't make -- in January could prove all the difference in the fight for survival. Gus Poyet has talked recently about a lack of sufficient funds being available, but however much is in the kitty, Sunderland need to make the most of regardless. Here are five players the Black Cats could target during the January window.

Sunderland are among the lowest scorers in the Premier League this season and the Black Cats are desperate for an injection of life into their attack. Danny Ings is a striker who will likely be pursued by many teams throughout January and Sunderland will surely be among them.

The Sunderland defense has been a mess for the most part this season, and a little too fond of scoring own goals too. Strengthening that area of the team, though, can often be easier than finding a striker who is capable of scoring the goals that the team needs. Ezequiel Munoz is a player who has attracted recent interest for his displays in Serie A this season with Palermo and Munoz will be a name to watch in January when the bids start flying.

3. Fabio Borini

Fabio Borini was on loan at Sunderland last season and would have been back at the Stadium of Light once again had the Italian not insisted on attempting to force his way onto the Liverpool team, despite being advised otherwise by Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers. Expect Sunderland to return for Borini once again and attempt to do the deal they hoped for in the summer.

Jean Makoun had an unsuccessful spell in the Premier League with Aston Villa after joining the Villans back in 2011. Makoun, however, has rebounded well after moving on to Rennes in Ligue 1 and now has only six months remaining on his contract. Makoun has been linked with a move to various EPL teams recently, including Sunderland, and a move cannot be ruled out for January.

Yaya Sanogo has reportedly been made available for loan in January by Arsenal. Sunderland are a team who are desperately in need of a striker or two as they attempt to produce more goals in the second half of the season, and a Sanogo loan deal could be a good fit with both the team, and the budget.
