Wayne Rooney will be the key for a Manchester United victory at Tottenham when they face off early tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. EST. Both sides are coming off victories from just a day ago against Newcastle United and Leicester City during the Christmas schedule.
Rooney scored a brace against Newcastle in the first half as he played in his usual role as the attacking midfielder in the 3-4-1-2 set-up under Louis van Gaal, who is hellbent on using this system. Rooney is still allowed to play in his free role going forward, and he does stride back to help his teammates defend, just as the captain always should.
Tottenham will line up with the 4-2-3-1 to keep the midfield busy and will rely on Harry Kane to score up front. He will be their best going forward, as Spanish international striker Roberto Soldado is still yet to hit top-form for his new club since his arrival in 2013.
United almost entirely changed their starting line-up since van Gaal arrived in the summer and is just now starting to dominate and win multiple games. With players like Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw all improving the roster, this team should be nearly unstoppable in the Premier League.
Even with the new signings, Rooney is still the heart and soul of this team. He was there in their last two Champions League finals and has been there overall since 2004. His strength, vision, bravery and form have all been essential to the club’s performance this season.
The departure of Sir Alex Ferguson made it tough for him to shine last season, but with a tough guy and intelligent coach in van Gaal taking the helm, he has snapped right back into his own reality.
Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 Manchester United
Rooney scores at least one and plays a huge part in the other.
