Leicester City find themselves at the bottom of the EPL standings at the halfway stage and some vast improvements will be necessary for the Foxes to escape the threat of relegation. One avenue of hope, however, could be to make some smart additions to the team in the rapidly approaching January transfer window. Here are five players who Leicester could target in the new year window.

Dwight Gayle did an admirable job in helping to keep Crystal Palace in the Premier League last season. This season, however, Gayle has been isolated under new manager, Neil Warnock. Warnock was, ultimately, sacked this week but Gayle's future will remain up in the air for the time being and Leicester, in addition to other EPL teams, will continue to look on with interest.

Kris Commons was the top scorer in last season's Scottish Premiership but has since found himself on the bench under new Celtic manager, Ronny Deila, this season. Commons' contract expires at the end of the season, and with a new contract not seeming to be close to being agreed, Leicester could move for Commons next month in the hope that the striker can provide the goals to fire them to safety.

Danny Ings is set to be one of the most pursued players in the transfer window due to his performances so far in the EPL and his soon-to-be expiring contract. Whether he leaves Burnley or not is unknown, but expect Leicester and a slew of other clubs to test the waters next month.

Curtis Davies was Hull City's player of the season for the 2013-14 campaign, but has struggled to scale those same heights once again this season. Davies has been dropped to the bench at times and has recently been linked to a move away from Hull. Leicester are rumored to be interested, although whether Hull really would give up on last year's player of the season already is unknown.

Andrej Kramaric has drawn interest from a number of clubs recently, including Leicester. The problem for the Foxes, however, is that the other clubs interested include the likes of Chelsea and Inter Milan. Leicester will struggle to compete with those teams, of course, but speculation suggests that if Nigel Pearson cannot sign Kramaric on a permanent basis, and the player does join Chelsea, then the striker could join Leicester on loan anyway.
