They may be on course to do the quadruple this season, but if Chelsea are to reach their full potential between now and May 2015, then the Blues are going to need to tidy up their away form in the meantime.
The last eight away games Chelsea have played in the Premier League have seen the league leaders draw four, win three and lose one, and for a team with the ambitions of the Blues, that’s far too many drawn games. A 50 percent draw percentage is too high and if that percentage keeps up for the remainder of the season, then you would have to question Chelsea’s credentials to win the EPL title, never mind a near impossible quadruple.
The home form of Chelsea has been absolutely outstanding: nine games played, nine wins — and that form alone can give the west Londoners a great chance of winning any competition that they are in. But the away form will put tremendous pressure on the players to maintain that home form if it does not improve.
At the highest level, the smallest of margins can make all the difference and it’s not in the middle of the season where you notice the difference, it’s at the end when you’re a point or two short and you look back at the games you could have done better in — when it’s too late. By no means do Chelsea need to be perfect away from home as they have been at Stamford Bridge, but they cannot be drawing more than they win.
Even with Manchester City being as erratic as they have been, you can’t keep allowing them back into the race because eventually they will take full advantage. City will likely not be as erratic all season and have even shown signs of that before suffering defeat in their last game at home to Burnley.
City, though, have been generally erratic, they look like a team searching for their best form. Chelsea, on the other hand, have been in top form and they’re still drawing away games. That is the worrying sign. Overall, Chelsea’s EPL record for this season is still fantastic, but at the very highest level, when the smallest of margins count, the away form must improve for Chelsea as they enter 2015 and the second half of the EPL season.
