Speculations on Lionel Messi’s future with Barcelona have begun to come into question. The mid-season funny season has begun in Europe and rumors have begun to fly. The Catalan club must serve two transfer season bans, which would effectively not allow Barca to sign new players to improve the squad. Reports indicate that Messi is unhappy with the situation and elite clubs have started to salivate at the prospect of signing him.
The story of Messi being lured away from Barcelona seems all together improbable, as the Argentine attacker just signed an improved deal last summer where he will receive $27 million a year until 2018. There is a finite number of clubs that can afford to sign the Barcelona star. The Argentine is thought to be valued at upwards of 220 million euros, and his buyout clause states that a club must pay 250 million euros to sign him out right.
Messi has been at Barcelona since he was 11 years old and diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. No other team was willing to pay the medical bills for the diminutive Argentine’s disease, but Barcelona promptly signed him and paid for his treatment.
Barcelona occupies the highest rung of the football hierarchy with the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Any move away from the Camp Nou would be to Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and possibly Chelsea, who are all rich enough to afford Messi. However, all three clubs would be a step down for the Barca star.
Messi and Barcelona are bonded strongly together, and a one-year transfer embargo will not break their marriage.
