5 Players Newcastle Could Target During the January Transfer Window

It's going to be a busy month for Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley. In between bouts of tormenting the fans with his "business before football" style, he has to appoint a new puppet-manager, ensure that the team runs along smoothly until a full-time boss is in place and navigate an important January transfer window. There's still plenty of time to accomplish those tasks, but will Ashley dig deep to reinvigorate Newcastle?

Brown Ideye landed at West Brom in the summer with high hopes and an even higher price tag. Just six months later, Ideye could be on his way out of the club after scoring just one goal -- a header during a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City -- in 10 Premier League games. Stunningly, fellow Premier League side Newcastle have been linked with a bid. Given owner Mike Ashley's lust for fan anger, splashing cash on a ready-made flop may appeal to him...

Diego Capel has played through almost every age tier of the Spanish national side, including the senior team. He's a left winger with over 100 games for Sevilla, and just under 100 games for Sporting Lisbon. He even spent some of his youth days with Barcelona. Now at 26, he's on the move. Newcastle have been linked before, but their advances were rebuffed. Could they swoop for the midfielder now he's become available?

Andros Townsend is a tricky player in more than one sense. He can leave you dead and buried on the floor with a flick of his feet in one moment, but in the next, he can leave you wondering how on Earth he was called up to the England national team. It's difficult to know which Andros Townsend will turn up. Newcastle made no secret of their interest last summer, though, his recent good form has edged him closer to the Spurs' first team.

M'Baye Niang is a 20-year-old, lightening-quick, AC Milan forward. He fits the mold of Newcastle's transfer policy of unearthing young, foreign talent for a lower price than what you'd pay for a tried and tested Premier League player. Niang is not unknown, though, with Chelsea and Arsenal monitoring the situation. Newcastle can offer a better stab at first-team football, though, which is the main reason he is leaving AC Milan. Time will tell.

Newcastle need a manager. Simple. The appointment will surely come during this month and that's when their transfer plans will grow clearer. This doesn't apply to caretaker boss John Carver (pictured), but most candidates will have players in mind from their old clubs who they trust. Tim Sherwood has knowledge of Spurs, for example. If Newcastle are in the market for cost-effective transfers, raiding the fringe players may be an option.
