It was announced over the weekend that Sebastian Giovinco will be joining Toronto FC after the completion of the Serie A season. The Atomic Ant will become the highest paid player in MLS, usurping Kaka of the Orlando City SC by earning $7 million a year for the next five years. Giovinco is in his prime at the age of 27, and to capture a player of his level at his prime is an absolute coup for MLS.

MLS has started to gain a reputation as the place for retiring super stars to extend their careers going up against inferior opponents. Players like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Thierry Henry were well past their prime when they decided to ply their trade in the United States. However, Giovinco is a player in his prime and was once compared to the legendary Alessandro Del Piero.

It’s true that Giovinco is not at the caliber of players like Beckham and Henry, but he has proven to fans of the Serie A that if given the chance, he can decide a match. Although the Atomic Ant has spent most of his time at Juventus as a bench warmer or a super sub, Giovinco proved lethal during his time at Parma.

Giovinco has played at the highest level of the game at Juventus and has represented the Italian national team on 21 separate occasions. He is still capable of playing for a club like Southampton or any number of mid-table teams in the elite leagues in Europe. Toronto and MLS fans should be extremely pleased with this signing and what it could mean for the future of the league.
