There is no shortage of scandal in global soccer, but the issue around the France Men’s National Team is still a shocker. Karim Benzema and up to four others are being questioned about potential blackmail surrounding a sex tape of Mathieu Valbuena. While many other parts of this scandal are more important in the big picture, the current situation will crush France’s hopes of winning Euro 2016 on their home soil.

Valbuena finally broke his silence regarding the situation on Friday. He says there has never been proof that anyone had a sex tape, but Benzema insisted that his teammate meet someone regarding the situation. Valbuena says the issue with Benzema is a lack of respect and that he cannot be taken for an idiot. The players are not allowed to approach one another and neither were called in for recent friendlies. Benzema has been charged as a part of the extortion plot.

Samir Nasri appears to be involved in the situation as well. He has denied any allegations, but his reputation is not allowing fans to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Benzema has 27 international goals and has six goals for Real Madrid this season. Nasri has logged over 40 appearances for the national team, while Valbuena was one of the best players at the World Cup for France. All three currently play for teams in the Champions League. France still have plenty of talent, but these players are firmly in the picture.

With the new developments the French Football Federation has lodged papers as a civil party to the criminal case, which means they can access case files and attend all hearings. This is likely a way for the Federation to keep their name clear of any accusations. Coach Didier Deschamps will have to consult with other officials on whether to call in any of the players involved.

Deschamps will have a lot more to do in the locker room with the scandal surrounding his team. Keeping the rest of his team focused will be the top priority. However, this scandal will likely squash the home team’s chances of winning next year.
