With still no heir apparent to Lauren Holiday identified, coach Jill Ellis is giving a look to more center midfielders in the latest USWNT camp. Two players get their first call-up to the full national team with the 2016 Olympics looming. With rules dictating a small roster for Rio, the depth at center midfielder is vital to the team.

Of the eight midfielders called into the next camp, only Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd and Heather O’Reilly are not candidates for the deep-lying midfielder role this camp. It is not necessarily a position that must be defense first given the way Ellis has employed her players. They must have a non-stop engine that will allow them to get all over the field. The ideal player will be able to turn defense into offense quickly.

Danielle Colaprico is getting a chance after being named the NWSL Rookie of the Year. Colaprico played in all 21 matches for the Chicago Red Stars. Despite the award-winning year, her first call-up may be overlooked by the arrival of Rose Lavelle.

Lavelle was named top player in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship. The 20-year-old midfielder is one of the most technically-gifted players in the pool. She has impressed everywhere she has been, and some analysts are suggesting that her chances of making the Olympics roster are high. Lavelle would fill the playmaker role well, but time will tell how she will fit with this team when her first camp begins next week.

Morgan Brian is also an option as she has been impressive in different midfield roles under Ellis. Tobin Heath has been played in the center over the last few months and continues to try to adapt to the role. Samantha Mewis has earned just four caps with the USWNT. If all else fails there is still a chance that Lloyd or Julie Johnston could get shifted into a different role.

Filling the core of the roster will be vital for Ellis as tough decisions are looming for the Olympics. The final matches of the victory tour are giving her a chance to look at more players and hopefully find Holiday’s replacement.
