Preview and Prediction for Columbus Crew SC vs. Portland Timbers in 2015 MLS Cup

2015 mls cup

Jason Mowry-USA TODAY Sports

As is often the case with MLS, not many predicted the two teams left standing for the 2015 MLS Cup. Columbus Crew SC will host the Portland Timbers on Sunday as contrasting clubs look to take home the title.

One of the best offenses in the league will clash with one of the best defenses. There are interesting matchups all over the field. Even though this may not be the matchup that the front office hoped for in terms of television ratings, it is sure to be entertaining for fans.

To understand the contrasting styles of these teams, look no further than the players making the most media appearances this week. For Columbus, it is Kei Kamara. The powerful striker helped lead Columbus to an impressive offensive record and continued his scoring touch in the playoffs. He has been the energy for the team all year long and many expect him to factor on the box score Sunday.

For Portland, it is Nat Borchers. The bearded center back has been a stalwart all year long. He was an immediate fan favorite when he joined the Timbers this year. His last ditch block against FC Dallas may be the reason Portland was able to hold onto the lead and make the final.

Borchers vs. Kamara is a key battle on Sunday, but more importance should be placed on the midfield. If Diego Valeri and Darlington Nagbe can get into a flow, then Portland is likely coming out on top. However, Tony Tchani and Wil Trapp have played stout defense during the playoffs. At the same time, Portland must be concerned with Federico Higuain and Ethan Finlay looking to find the open spaces and spring the attack.

The wild card in this game will be Harrison Afful. The Crew SC outside back has a motor that does not stop and has shown the ability to deliver a great ball into the box. His game has worked exceptionally well in coach Gregg Berhalter‘s system. If the game reaches a stalemate in the midfield, Afful could break it open.

The first goal will dictate a lot in this game, but it will also open the match up. There should be plenty of chances each way, making for an entertaining final.

Prediction: 3-2 Columbus
