When Manchester United take to the field in the Volkswagen Arena on Tuesday to play Wolfsburg, the Red Devils must do something they’ve failed miserably at all season: attack and score goals. United find themselves in a must-win position in order to guarantee qualification for the Champions League second round and avoid being dependant on results elsewhere. Wolfsburg lead the group ahead of United, though, and securing a win will require the Premier League team to step out of their comfort zone on this away trip.

The Germans are not only top of Group B ahead of United, they are also fifth in the competitive Bundesliga in Germany. The Wolves have the third best defense in the division, and for a team struggling to score goals like United, that’s a huge problem. Louis van Gaal‘s team has consistently struggled to break teams down in the EPL and that creative struggle is likely to continue in Wolfsburg.

On top of their defense, the Germans can also boast the fourth best attack in the German top flight, too. There will be issues at both ends of the field for United and the pressure will be on for the Red Devils to get through somehow and secure qualification. For once, United are going to have to take chances and play with some adventure and risk. It’s against van Gaal’s way, but it’s the only way on this occasion.

United’s attack is faltering badly and is just the eighth most potent offense in the EPL. However, the defense is the best in the division, although it’s a good job with a toothless frontline like United’s. Without that defense United would be down near Chelsea somewhere, lounging in the lower half of the standings.

Unfortunately for United, they have to score in Germany — a clean sheet alone will not get the job done. You can’t win a game without a goal and United need a win. The Red Devils haven’t been good enough offensively this season, and that must now suddenly change against Wolfsburg. United must attack their opponents if they are to have any hope of getting the win they need.
