New York Red Bulls Surging After Tough Start To 2016 MLS Season

By Taylor Sturm

The New York Red Bulls finished the 2015 MLS season as the No. 1 seed in the playoffs thanks to a brilliant regular season and came into 2016 with similar expectations.

But they struggled to begin the season, losing six of their first seven games. Not only were these disappointing losses in several winnable games, but New York’s defense was ripped open several times and the offense could barely get anything going. The beauty of MLS is that any team can win any given week. Unfortunately, if a team gets in too big of a hole early in the season, clawing their way back to the top is nearly impossible.

That being said, the Red Bulls have done just that and in a spectacular fashion.

Winning five of their last seven games, New York sits at second in the Eastern Conference on 19 points and has been scoring like crazy, as they have scored at least three goals in four of these wins. The better news for NYRB is that their goal differential is currently at plus-four at a time when only four teams in the conference have a positive goal differential. This run was capped off with a massive seven-goal victory over their rival, New York City FC, and was followed up by a three-goal victory and another clean sheet over Toronto FC.

Though the Philadelphia Union surprisingly took an early Eastern Conference lead, it looks like NYRB are finally getting things together in 2016, making them the hottest and most dangerous team in MLS moving forward.
