Seattle Sounders’ Early Struggles Will Only Get Worse

By Taylor Sturm

The Seattle Sounders have been one of the most fun teams to watch in MLS over the past few seasons and have boasted the talent to back that up.

In 2016, however, Seattle heads into the 2016 Copa America Centenario “break” sitting second to last in the Western Conference standings with just 13 points, 11 total goals scored and a -4 goal differential.

Unfortunately for Seattle, it looks doubtful that its luck will improve anytime soon due in part to the time it will take for its offense to start clicking.

The loss of Obafemi Martins has devastated this offense, as his constant threat seemed to open up other players to take opportunities and because he was always capable of doing something spectacular. Jordan Morris has begun to hit his stride for the Sounders, but he is no Martins and his style of play is far less direct and explosive.

Equally as damaging but gone for different reasons, Marco Pappa’s absence seems to leave no one to pull the strings for this offense. Sure, Andreas Ivanschitz is a spectacular crosser of the ball and plays great on the wings, but he is the type of player who would have more success with Pappa on the field rather than trying to make everything happen for this offense.

It is far too early to say this season is a bust for Seattle, but from the looks of things, it seems like this season will be about chemistry and development with next season being the one in which it challenges the top of MLS.

Keep strong, Seattle fans; your time is coming. It just might not be this season.
