Cardinals Trade Idea of the Day for July 24th

First Things First: Develop a Middle Infielder already!

If you read my article on Friday, you know I am going to start doing a “Trade of the Day” idea for the St. Louis Cardinals everyday until the trade deadline.  Well, I’m sure you are saying…where the heck was yesterday’s.  Well…it took me all day to think of a deal….and at the very end of me typing the post out (literally the last paragraph) the screen goes BLANK!!  All gone!  So…here goes Deja Vu!  This is going to get a bit controversial (and I’m sure ugly for my comment box), but here me out…

The Cardinals send

Chris Carpenter – His ERA was 4.95 on May 15th, but is now down to 3.73 and looks to be hitting his stride

The New York Yankees send

RHP Dellin Betances – The kid is huge and his stuff is sick.  But if the Yanks balk – then get LHP Manny Banuelos – Manny throws low to mid 90′s gas with an above average curveball and changeup.

Let the bashing begin.  The Cardinals goal is to WIN the WORLD SERIES, not the NL Central!  And I’m sorry to break it to you Cardinals fans – the Redbirds do not have the horses to compete with the Philadelphia Phillies, the San Francisco Giants and /or the Atlanta Braves.  Carpenter and Garcia can pitch with almost anyone in the league on certain days, but when those playoff teams get to our 3-5 starters…well, the game is over before it even started.  The only way the Cardinals can/could compete with those playoff teams is by getting James Shields (which I suggested in the 1st ever Trade Idea of the Day for the Cardinals on Friday).  But it is looking more and more like the Cincinnati Reds have what the Tampa Bay Rays crave and desperately need…young Major League ready bats at AAA.  The Cardinals definitely do not have what the Reds have in that department.

And with that said, Carpenter is a free agent at the end of the year and there is talk that he would like to finish his career in St. Louis.  And if that’s the case – someone needs to sit him down and explain to Carp how he can make this team better – and that is by welcoming being a rental player.  At the same time, someone needs to sit Tony Larussa down and explain to him that the Cardinals are a better team when Kyle McClellan is our 7th and/or 8th inning guy.  Deal with it Kyle…you are a better reliever than a starter…deal with it!

Not much needs to be said about the Yankees side of this deal.  They get a bulldog, playoff tested starting pitcher who also has experience pitching in the AL East during his time with the Toronto Blue Jays.  When your payroll is $200 Million plus…well, first it is embarrassing that you only have 1 starting pitcher you can count on every 5 days.  Second, the Yankees will need another starting pitcher to beat either the Texas Rangers no less the Boston Red Sox.  The Yankees offense should be able to get them by whatever team would come out of the AL Central if that is who they would be lucky enough to play in the 1st round…but they have no hope at beating Texas or Boston with Phil Hughes (is he healthy), AJ Burnett, Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon rounding out their starting staff.  Holy Crap…at least the Cardinals have 2 quality starting pitchers and the Redbirds payroll is only $109 Million (I never thought I would say only and $109 Million in the same sentence EVER)!  At least Carp would give the Yankees a shot at winning the World Series this year and the Cardinals rotation would look even better from 2012-2015 with a deal like this – picture it…Wainwright, Shelby Miller, Carlos Martinez & Dellin Betances – OH MAMA!!

So what do you think Cardinals fans – let us know your thoughts in the comment section of this post!

2 Rants to “Cardinals Trade Idea of the Day for July 24th”

  1. Roehrig says:

I think ppl will be upset with that mostly because you are talking about helping the Yanks win another title…. but it really does make ALOT of sense if we could build our rotation with good young arms for 7-10 years to come and piece bats around that… sounds like good things for the red birds

  2. Robb Greenhill says:

Our rotation is already built. We have Martinez, Miller and Wainwright; let’s not be greedy. Delscaso looked pretty damn good at SS last night. I never noticed his ability to shoot a ball into opposite field either. You can take “trading to the Yankees” stance as shove it. I would rather see Cubs player getting traded to the Cardinals. Last thing is last on that ;) We need a damn starter, that doesn’t come from the Yankees. I remember the team in 2006 wasn’t suppose to win it either. Who was the ace in our rotation? Was it Weaver and Suppan?!?!?! I think less salt water, and more beer would clear your head. I can’t believe I just read “trade with the Yankees.” Unbelievable!!
