Now that Josh McDaniels has joined up with the New England Patriots heading into their Divisional showdown with the Denver Broncos, the St. Louis Rams have to feel good about their decision. The motivation behind the Rams allowing their offensive coordinator to join up with another team at a moment’s notice was totally financial.

With the Patriots taking on McDaniels for the remainder of the 2011 season, it takes the Rams off the hook for paying any potential severance when they hire their next head coach and allows them to use that cash to pay any new staff that is hired under the next regime. Word has it that when or if Jeff Fisher decides to officially become the Rams new head coach he would not have been interested in keeping McDaniels around as the offensive guru. Had the team been forced to dismiss McDaniels rather than handing him over to New England, they would have been on the hook for next year’s salary as he was under contract through the 2012 season.

At this point it seems the biggest loser in this entire ordeal is McDaniels’ former employer in the Broncos who will now have to not only deal with a Tom Brady led offense of the prolific Patriots, but also face a former insider. In typical Bill Belichick fashion, one can only assume that the Pats have been picking McDaniels’ brain ferociously since learning that Denver would be their upcoming opponent gaining any and every advantage they can on the Broncos’ personnel prior to this weekend’s upcoming contest. The Pats would surely already have been a heavy favorite in the gaming heading in, but now thanks to the Rams, New England has an even bigger advantage for Saturday evening’s tussle.

    Dumb article;
    The Broncos and Patriots played less than a month ago and have been scouted out. Besides, the Broncos offense and personnel are entirely different as when McDaniels was coach. The Patriots can learn nothing from McDaniels, particularly given his miserable performance over the past 2 years. As a Broncos fan, any advice from McDaniels taken by the Patriots would be welcome!

      I agree with Jstagamtome. Much has changed since McDaniels coached the Broncos to destruction. I prefer Josh McDaniels to Joe O’Brien as Pats Offensive Coordinator, but I wasn’t thrilled with him when he was last employed by New England. The offense was super because of the personnel. I considered the play-calling to be nothing special and was even able to call out the play many times in the second half of the almost-perfect season. As a Patriots fan, I would have preferred a reunion with Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel as offensive and defensive coordinators. The two of them with Bill Belichick is the best combination of coaches I’ve ever had the privilege to witness. Of course, having Tom Brady makes everyone look better.
