As the St. Louis Rams organization anxiously awaits Jeff Fisher’s decision on whether or not he will accept the position as the club’s next head coach, the team has decided to do its due diligence in the meantime. The interview process has been Fisher and no one else to this point, but that is about to change as the team has scheduled meetings with both Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

It still seems the team would prefer the experience of a Jeff Fisher type coach to take over after a young assistant in Steve Spagnuolo failing in his three seasons at the helm, yet bringing in Allen and Chudzinski provide a contingency plan should something unforeseen occur. Fisher has interviewed with the Miami Dolphins as well as St. Louis so this may be a plan B type of move just as some insurance.

Chudzinski coached the Panthers’ young offense in 2011 and worked wonders creating a scheme tailored to fit Cam Newton’s attributes. He interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier, but that position was filled by Mike Mularkey on Tuesday.

As for Allen, he is just 39 years of age and took over the defensive coordinator responsibilities this year in Denver after spending 2008-10 as the team’s secondary coach. Allen was schooled under New Orleans Saints’ defensive guru Gregg Williams and employs a similarly aggressive style.

Clearly these interviews are hoped to be window dressing for the Rams who would like to receive an answer from Fisher sooner rather than later. Still fans should be pleased to hear that this team is not content to simply place all of its eggs in the Jeff Fisher basket at this point.
