With many signs pointing to the Cleveland Browns as the team with the inside track to dealing for the Rams second overall selection, it only seems logical to hypothetically ponder on who the Rams would take with the Browns two first rounders. A trade with Cleveland would be ideal for St. Louis because it would only drop them two slots in the initial order (which means they can still land an immediate impact player) and adds another first round pick to their cache.

At pick number four, odds are that the two quarterbacks (Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck) are gone at picks one and two while the Minnesota Vikings take Matt Kalil with the third choice. In such a scenario, the Rams would have to consider Oklahoma State wideout Justin Blackmon, but there is a new darkhorse in the running for that potential selection.

LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne is thought to be the only true shutdown cornerback in this year’s draft class and the Rams secondary was a nightmare a year ago. The team had ten (yes 10) defensive backs go on season-ending injured reserve (IR) and really struggled to stop anything via the air. Adding an instant starter like Claiborne to the mix would immediately upgrade their defense and go a long way in solidifying a porous secondary.

That choice would still leave both the wide receiver and offensive tackle needs to be filled, but with 22nd pick from Cleveland in a trade situation and the 33rd choice at the top of round two from their own list of selections, the Rams could still fill both needs with top tier talent in one offseason. Players to consider at pick 22 would be perhaps Alshon Jeffrey or Michael Floyd at wideout and potentially Mike Adams or Cordy Glenn at the tackle spot.

Dealing with the Browns would provide the Rams with tremendous versatility looking ahead to April’s NFL Draft and could allow the team to become relevant again in a heartbeat. Fans should be optimistic about a real turnaround in St. Louis if a deal of this magnitude comes to fruition.
