During the Rams search for a trade partner in the deal for the second overall draft choice, many likened the ransom that they should have sought for the pick to the haul that the San Diego Chargers received in the Eli Manning trade. There are even more similarities to that 2004 deal than meet the eye however as General Manager Les Snead walked into the perfect situation in St. Louis just as Chargers’ GM A.J. Smith did in ’04.

While the cupboard may have appeared bare for both coming in with teams picking at the top of the NFL Draft, that was far from the case for both Smith’s Bolts or Snead’s Rams. Both teams have a relatively solid nucleus of players to build around and workhorse running backs (LaDainian Tomlinson and Steven Jackson respectively) to work with.

Still like the Chargers, this 2012 rebuilding job of the Rams will require some real attention to detail from Snead as he sorts through the roster wreckage. This team was decimated by injuries in the secondary and quarterback Sam Bradford spent an inordinate amount of time on the turf. Addressing both of those issues will be much simpler now that the Rams have a plethora of draft choices to work with however and getting this team back to winning shouldn’t be far away.

Unlike the Chargers though, the Rams already have a top draft choice incumbent quarterback in place just longing for some protection and a few weapons to distribute the pigskin to. If the Rams GM can continue his run of smart personnel decisions in both free agency and the upcoming drafts over the next three years, the Rams could rise from the ashes very quickly.
