Depth has been an issue for the St. Louis Rams in recent years and they hope to address those potential problems before they have a chance to manifest once again. The defense has been a particular area of weakness for the club and they hope to have taken an important step in changing that on Monday.

Even though suspended defensive coordinator Gregg Williams came over from the New Orleans Saints this offseason, the Rams refuse to shy away from his former players when trying to improve their football team. The club signed linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar to their roster Monday hoping to add some key depth to a position that really lacks any punch.

The Rams true lack of quality depth at linebacker made them very susceptible to injury issues last season, but the addition of Dunbar greatly helps to alleviate those problems. Dunbar took part in 68 percent of the defensive snaps with New Orleans last year and his versatility to fit in at any of the three linebacker positions made him a key component to their defense. His value wasn’t limited to defense however, as he also was a big contributor to the Saints’ special teams unit.

Although this signing gives the Rams another body to rotate in an out at the linebacker spot, the team still lacks for bodies at the position. Incumbent starter James Laurinaitis is the only returning starter while back-ups Josh Hull and Justin Cole are the only other players on the depth chart at the position. There’s no doubt the Rams may target a linebacker at some point during the upcoming NFL Draft and could look to further strengthen what was a weakness for them in 2011.
