Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fire Head Coach Raheem Morris
After a tumultuous season that saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers end the season on a 10 game losing streak and finish with a record of 4-12 Buccaneers ownership has decided to part ways with head coach Raheem Morris. General Manager Mark Dominik released this statement on Monday, “I have a lot of respect and appreciation for the passion Coach Morris gave to our football team, but this change is one we felt was necessary.”
Morris was 17-31 in his three seasons as head coach of the Buccaneers. After last season’s strong performance in which the Buccaneers narrowly missed the playoffs and finished with a 10-6 record, it seemed as if Morris had the Buccaneers headed in the right direction. But the 2011-2012 season was filled with many injuries which didn’t really help Morris in his quest to win the NFC South.
But the biggest reason in firing Morris was how the team played down the stretch. The Buccaneers looked like a team who had quit and were not even trying to give their best effort. Once a head coach has lost his team in that sort of way there is really no other option but to let him go. Another contributing factor in the decision to ire Raheem Morris was how the defense performed throughout the season (Morris is the team’s defensive coordinator also) surrendering the most points and rushing yards in the league while also ranking 30th in total yards allowed.
In addition to firing Morris the Buccaneers will also relieve Morris’ staff of their duties essentially cleaning house and starting brand new for the 2012-2013 season. General Manager Mark Dominik will stay in his role however, as he is under contract for the next three seasons.
