Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2012 Head Coach Search: Joe Philbin to be interviewed
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received permission on Monday to interview Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Philbin is coming off a tough two weeks, losing his son in a tragic drowning accident and losing against the New York Giants on Sunday. Since he has taken over as offensive coordinator for the Packers in 2007, his teams have been in the top ten in total points and yards every season. With Josh Freeman and the stable of wide receivers in Tampa, Philbin has all the tools needed to be successful and then some. Though his teams have never been better than 14th in total rushing yards, he has never had a dependable work horse back like Legarrette Blount.
The Miami Dolphins have already interviewed Joe Philbin and he is said to be the only true other candidate for their head coach job. The other one is Mike Zimmer, whom the Buccaneers interviewed today. Like the Dolphins, Philbin is only the second real candidate the Buccaneers should look at pursuing. The Bucs need to interview Philbin ASAP and make a solid offer to either coach before one or both of these guys are signed. The Oakland Raiders have expressed interest in Philbin as well and both he and Zimmer are likely to be off the market within a week or so given they are two hot commodities. Joe Philbin fits better than Zimmer into the Buccaneers personnel make up and probably jumps to the top of the list.
