Is Titans QB Kerry Collins Leaning Towards Retirement?
With Vince Young out of the picture, the Tennessee Titans were hoping that Kerry Collins would stick around for at least one more season to show the way for Jake Locker–who the team recently used their first-round pick on in the 2011 NFL Draft. While at first it seemed like Collins would be back for his 18th NFL season, a recent interview by one of his teammates makes it seem like the veteran quarterback could be on his way to retirement.
Peter King of Sports Illustrated discussed the situation with the Titans on Monday and how Titans guard Jake Scott believes Collins doesn’t want to be a “nursemaid” to a young quarterback like Locker.
From King’s article:
“I think I’ve thought all along that Kerry Collins would be back for a training-wheel season for Jake Locker in Tennessee … until I heard what veteran guard Jake Scott of the Titans had to say. “I’m not sure Kerry isn’t going to say, ‘I’m done,’ and ride off into the sunset,” Scott told Ross Tucker and me on the radio last week. “I don’t think he wants to come back and be a nursemaid to a young kid. Money’s not an issue to him.” The Titans will certainly need a vet, and a better one than a Rusty Smith-type, in 2011, and maybe beyond.”
Collins has spent the last five seasons with the Titans and even started seven games for the team in 2010. There’s no question the team would welcome Collins back with open arms, but whether or not he would be willing to serve as a backup in 2011–that’s a different story.
