Longhorns Recruiting Class of 2013 Off to a Another Strong Start
Less than 3 weeks removed from National Signing Day when the Texas Longhorns football program inked the nation’s #2 ranked recruiting class for 2012, there hasn’t been much rest for Mack Brown and his young and eager coaching staff.
The Longhorns’ class of 2013 currently has 4 verbal commitments from some of the top athletes in the country. All four of them are players listed in the Rivals Top 100 as some of the best overall players in the nation.
The first player to commitment to the Longhorns’ most recent class was the 6’4″, 250 lb star out of Celina, TX, Jake Raulerson. The coaching staff told Raulerson that they would give him a look at several postions, including defensive end, left tackle, tight end, and center. After receiving 26 other offers, including ones from most of the top flight football programs across the nation, Raulerson called Mack Brown and publicly accepted the offer to play for the Horns. When Mack asked why he picked Texas, Jake responded that, “We are going to win a national title in the next three years and I want to be a part of it.”
Last weekend, the Longhorns hosted their first junior day of the season, and much to the dismay of previously spoiled fans, the weekend ended without a single commitment from any of the attendees.
However, in the days since, the commitments have been rolling in from some of the best and most sought after players in the country.
Earlier this week, Dallas Jesuit wide receiver, Jake Oliver, verbally pledged to the Longhorns. Standing at 6’4″, Oliver is listed as the #11 player in the State of Texas, and ranks #61 nationally. Last season, his junior year, Oliver racked up an impressive 1,639 yards receiving and added 23 touchdowns.
Commitment #3 came from the state’s #6 player, #69 in the nation, A’Shawn Robinson. Robinson, the Fort Worth Arlington Heights OL/DL is a beast at 6’4″ and weighing 302 lb. Though he plays on both sides of the ball, Robinson prefers to play on the defensive line, which is likely where he will end up for the Horns.
Early this morning, in a bit of a surprise, the Longhorns picked up a verbal commitment from the state’s top ranked player, Rival’s 5-Star quarterback, Tyrone Swoopes. Ranked as the 11th best player in the entire nation, Swoopes hails from Whitewright, TX, and has picked up offers from Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Stanford, and other top tier programs. Many recruiting gurus claim that Swoopes has a style similar to that of Texas Longhorn legend, Vince Young.
His junior season, Swoopes rushed for 2,267 yards at 13.3 yards per carry. He scored 29 rushing touchdowns and added 15 through the air. He passed for 1,394 yards, proving to be a true dual threat weapon at the quarterback position. The sky is the limit for this kid, who has as much potential as any Texas recruit since Vince walked the 40 Acres and led the Horns to their first National Championship in 30 years.
Though all commitments at this stage are verbal and therefore non-binding until National Signing Day next February, Mack Brown has a pretty good track record of keeping his commitments solid to Texas, even when the entire coaching staff, other than Mack himself, was replaced prior to last season.
There is still a long way to go, and it’s incredibly early in the process, but once again, the Texas Longhorns, behind Coach Mack Brown, known as Mr. February for a reason, are off to another strong start.
