With all the hubbub surrounding the Jays when they first acquired Colby Rasmus, it seems as though the team has hardly missed a beat with the centre fielder gone for the last couple of weeks, yes? It could be due to the renewed excitement in the call-ups of Adam Loewen and David Cooper, who have both provided moments of excitement for the Jays squad; miss him or not, Rasmus’ rehab in the minors is complete, and the outfielder will return to centre field for the Blue Jays starting tonight to begin a series against the Yankees.

Rasmus has been out since late August with a wrist injury, and had been with the AA Fisher Cats in New Hempshire for recovery, while helping the team in the Eastern League playoffs. He’ll now get a chance to get acclimated to AL pitching over the last couple of weeks of the season, and hopefully improve on what has been an unimpressive .216/.239-.637 OPS run with the Blue Jays so far. Not that we should be overly concerned, however; Rasmus has had less than 100 ABs with the team in a new league, and the longterm forecast still looks good given what his tools are, and what he’s already shown last season.

The unfortunate thing about this move is that it leaves Adam Loewen without a spot to play when Rasmus returns (unless the team shifts Bautista to 3rd to cover for Lawrie’s injury). The former pitcher has been impressive win his short time with the Jays so far, hitting .357/.438 with one home run in 5 games thus far, including a clutch 2-run single on Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox that capped an exciting comeback for the bluebirds.

That being said, I’m quite excited to see what Rasmus can bring to the table in these final games of the season – the 2012 Blue Jays lineup looks to be coming together quite nicely.
