2012 NBA Draft Grades: Terrence Ross to Toronto Raptors at No. 8
Toronto Raptors | Last Season: 23-43 (15th in Eastern Conference) | Draft Picks: 8, 37, 56
Season Summary: The Raptors seem to be stuck in NBA purgatory. They have some talent, but they can not get enough to get over the hump. Their big draft pick last year did not come over from Europe. They depended too much on players that would not be getting a lot of minutes on good teams. That leads to a bad record and an okay draft pick.
Draft Needs: I would be shocked if the Raptors end up using their first round pick. They want a solid small forward and are using the 8th pick as bait to pick up a guy like that. If they do hold on to this pick, I expect them to try to grab a scoring guard. That is one position that could help the team improve right away.
#2 Pick: Terrence Ross | SG | Washington
The sophomore Terrence Ross definitely showed the potential of being a big time scorer in the NBA after leading Washington in scoring and finishing 4th in the Pac-12. At 6-foot-6, Ross has pro size with plenty of range on his jump shot to make him a difficult matchup to guard.
2012-2013 Outlook: If the Raptors pick up a good small forward and Jonas Valančiūnas comes over to the team, they could threaten for a playoff spot. That is a lot of ifs, but that is what the Raptors have to look forward to. If they fail again, expect a lot of moves to come. The Raptors just may blow it all up and start everything over again.
