Tennessee Titans WR O.J. Murdock Dies From Apparent Suicide
Sad news in the NFL world this Monday morning as Tennessee Titans wide receiver O.J. Murdock was found dead in his car outside of Middleton High School from what appears to be a suicide. Police are reporting that Murdock suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and he was listed as critical condition at first before being pronounced dead roughly two hours after his body was found.
Murdock signed with the Titans last July as a rookie free agent, but was forced to miss the entire 2011 season after suffering an Achilles’ injury during training camp. There was plenty of questions surrounding Murdock’s absence from training camp this past weekend as the team failed to give an actual reason and claimed it was for “personal reasons.”
Either way, this is one of those stories that you hate to hear about in the sports world considering the type of potential that was there for Murdock in the NFL. He may have had his issues off the field after beginning his career at South Carolina and transferring to Fort Hays State, but this was a wide receiver that was once ranked No. 10 at his position in the country by Rivals.com–so the potential was certainly there.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Murdock family and the Titans organization during this tragic time. The fact that Murdock was only 25 years of age makes this story even more difficult to think about and it’s a shame we’ll never know what type of impact he could have made at the professional level.
