Rant-O-Matic: Looking at Athletics vs. Rangers, Nationals vs. Phillies
Here’s the latest edition of Rant-O-Matic for September 25, 2012:
With a win on Tuesday, the Rangers will clinch at least a Wild-Card berth in the American League as they look to reach the World Series for the third-straight season. Texas currently holds a five-game lead in the AL West over Oakland, but the two teams will square off against each other six more times before the regular season comes to an end–which means anything is possible.
The Athletics are currently in a comfortable position to play in the postseason considering they hold a two-game lead in the American League for the Wild Card spot, but they would obviously prefer to win the division title if possible.
It’s amazing how these two teams seemed to switch roles this year as the Nationals are just five wins away from clinching their first NL East title while the Phillies are on the verge of kissing their playoff hopes goodbye. Ross Detwiler and Cole Hamels will square off against each other on Tuesday and as crazy as it sounds–this game could have played a huge factor in the 2012 postseason one week ago.
At this time last week, Philadelphia seemed like one of the hottest teams in baseball using a late surge to possibly catch that final Wild Card spot in the National League. Unfortunately, a disappointing weekend series against the Atlanta Braves ruined any chance of that happening considering the amount of games remaining in 2012.
Either way, the Phillies would sure love to delay the Nationals plans of clinching the division title–so this matchup should be fun to watch.
