Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson Has First Breakout Game of 2012

Fantasy football owners have been ripping their hair out over Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson was playing over the first three weeks of the regular season. Over the team’s first three games, Johnson recorded just 45 rushing yards on 33 attempts, but Johnson finally had the breakout game fantasy owners have been waiting for in Week 4 against the Houston Texans.

Despite the Titans suffering a brutal 38-14 loss, Johnson recorded his first 100-yard game of the 2012 season on Sunday by rushing for 141 yards on 25 attempts. While the argument can be made that Johnson’s numbers may not have been as high with a closer game, this was still a huge relief for Tennessee considering all of the money they invested in their running back prior to the 2011 season.

After holding out all of training camp and the preseason, the Titans finally gave in and signed Johnson to a hefty extension with $30 million guaranteed, but he turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments of 2011 after finishing with just 1,047 rushing yards and four touchdowns. For a player that became the sixth player in NFL history in 2009 to rush for more than 2,000 yards, these types of numbers are unacceptable for a player like Johnson.

Hopefully, Sunday’s performance against the Texans was just what Johnson needed to get things rolling on a consistent basis again. Johnson fought so hard for a new contract because he believes he’s one of the top running backs in the league–so it’s time for him to prove so by displaying more of these types of performances.
