Rant and Rise: St. Louis Rams Win, USC Trojans Avoid Upset, Bobby Valentine Fired

Here’s the latest edition of Rant and Rise for October 5, 2012:

Arizona Cardinals Lose First Game of Season to St. Louis Rams

The Cardinals entered Thursday’s game against the Rams as one of the biggest surprises in the NFL as they were one of three undefeated teams, but they had zero answers for the Rams who recorded nine sacks on Kevin Kolb in their 17-3 win. With the win, St. Louis passed last year’s win total and it turning into one of the surprise contenders in the NFC West thanks to an impressive defense.

In his first year as head coach, Jeff Fisher is already making a huge impact for the Rams.

USC Trojans Avoid Upset Against Utah Utes

After trailing 21-10 in the second quarter, the last thing the Trojans needed on Thursday was to pick up their second loss of the season and ruin any chance of earning a BCS bowl game this year considering they already lost to the Stanford Cardinal a few weeks ago. Luckily, USC managed to rally thanks to an impressive performance by Matt Barkley (23 of 30 for 303 yards and three touchdowns) for the 38-28 win.

Boston Red Sox Fire Bobby Valentine

After a disappointing season that consisted of a 69-93 record, it was no surprise to see the Red Sox fire Valentine in his first year. 2012 was one of the worst seasons for Boston in 50 years and considering he was brought in to fix the mess from the end of last season–the argument can be made that Valentine didn’t help the situation at all.
