Rant and Rise: St. Louis Rams Win, USC Trojans Avoid Upset, Bobby Valentine Fired
Here’s the latest edition of Rant and Rise for October 5, 2012:
The Cardinals entered Thursday’s game against the Rams as one of the biggest surprises in the NFL as they were one of three undefeated teams, but they had zero answers for the Rams who recorded nine sacks on Kevin Kolb in their 17-3 win. With the win, St. Louis passed last year’s win total and it turning into one of the surprise contenders in the NFC West thanks to an impressive defense.
In his first year as head coach, Jeff Fisher is already making a huge impact for the Rams.
After trailing 21-10 in the second quarter, the last thing the Trojans needed on Thursday was to pick up their second loss of the season and ruin any chance of earning a BCS bowl game this year considering they already lost to the Stanford Cardinal a few weeks ago. Luckily, USC managed to rally thanks to an impressive performance by Matt Barkley (23 of 30 for 303 yards and three touchdowns) for the 38-28 win.
Boston Red Sox Fire Bobby Valentine
After a disappointing season that consisted of a 69-93 record, it was no surprise to see the Red Sox fire Valentine in his first year. 2012 was one of the worst seasons for Boston in 50 years and considering he was brought in to fix the mess from the end of last season–the argument can be made that Valentine didn’t help the situation at all.

Virginia vs Syracuse | 2014-15 ACC Men's Basketball Highlights
Virginia overcame an incredibly slow start to beat Syracuse 59-47 and wrap up a second straight ACC regular-season title. 13 minutes into the game, the Cavaliers only had 2 points. Clemson Wins 2015 ACC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship
The Clemson Tigers won the 2015 ACC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship, capturing their fifth title in six years and the programs sixth overall title. Florida State finished in second place, and Notre Dame took third. Clemson's Mimi Land compiled 19 points and was named the Women's Field MVP. Notre Dame's Molly Seidel earned gold medals in both the 5,000-meter and 3,000-meter distance runs to claim the Women's Track MVP. Read More
Virginia Tech Wins 2015 ACC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship
Virginia Tech's men's indoor track and field team captured its third ACC Championship Saturday in front of a home crowd at Rector Field House in Blacksburg. Florida State finished second, and Virginia took third. Clemson sprinter Tevin Hester shared men's track MVP honors with Syracuse distance runner Martin Hehir. NC State's Jonathan Addison and Virginia thrower Jordan Young split the field MVP honor. Each of them earned a gold and silver medal in the event. Read More
NC State Wins 2015 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship
NC State's men's swimming and diving team captured first place in 10 of 21 events, including 4-of-5 relays, en route to claiming the 2015 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship. The title was the Wolfpack's 25th men's swimming & diving title in league history, but first since 1992. Louisville finished second, and Virginia Tech took third. Wolfpack swimmer Simonas Bilis was voted the 2015 ACC Championship Most Valuable Men's Swimmer, winning six gold medals and 1 silver. Read More
